Carthusia

The history of the Carthusia fragrances is one as unique and romantic as the home of the Carthusia fragrance range - Capri, Italy.

Legend has it that in 1830, the father prior of the Carthusian monastery of St. James, caught by surprise with the arrival of Queen Joan of Anjour on Capri, quickly picked a bouquet of the most beautiful flowers on the island. These flowers remained in the same water for three days and when the flowers were chucked away, the father noticed that the water had acquired a fragrance unknown to him. He quickly tasked a friar familiar with alchemy to trace that smell, he did so, to the ‘Garofoilium Silvestre Caprese’ this water became the first perfume of Capri.

Over a century later, the old perfume formula was found, and after gaining permission from the Pope, chemists began to produce the perfume in the smallest perfume laboratory in the world. Today, Carthusia continues to create all perfumes by hand, ensuring that the world renowned, unique perfume continues to blend scents drawn exclusively from flora native to Capri.

Popular scents within the range include di Capri, Lady, Via Camarelle, Forget me and Gelsomini di Capri.
